The host McGraw Central boys’ basketball team opened its season in strong fashion Monday night, beating Blessed Virgin Mary Academy 60-40 in a non-league game.
In another CCL basketball outing, a Stockbridge Valley squad fresh from a victory in the LaFayette Lancers vs. Cancer Tournament this past weekend topped Morrisville-Eaton 56-45 and is off to a 3-0 start to the season.
The DeRuyter volleyball team, meanwhile, dropped its non-league season-opener to visiting Blessed Virgin Mary 25-23, 25-10, 26-24, 24-11.
McGraw 60, BVMA 40: The Eagles led 19-6 after the first quarter and never looked back in the easy win. Senior forward Jordan Cowen led the way with 13 points while senior guard Devon Tuttle added 12 points, senior guard Carter Towsley had 11 and junior guard Kevin Shorts had 10 in his first varsity game.
McGraw coach Matt Martins cited senior centers David Smith and Spencer Welsh for their rebounding (no totals reported) and offense and also noted that junior forward Dakota Stauber played well in his first varsity contest.
Peter Fullerton led BVMA with 10 points.
McGraw’s junior varsity team beat BVMA, with no score reported, led by Maurice Peterson with 15 points and Chris Pickert with 14.
Both McGraw teams host George Junior Republic Wednesday in non-league action, starting with the 5:30 p.m. JV contest.
IN CCL VOLLEYBALL: BVMA 3, DeRuyter 1: Senior middle hitter Emily Pelcher had five kills, three blocks, a dig and an ace and sophomore setter/right side Tayler Marshall seven assists, three aces, a kill, a block and a dig for the Rockets. Junior setter/right side Kaylee LaClair had four assists and an ace, junior middle hitter Lily Harvey three kills and senior middle hitter Karen Warner two kills, a block and an ace.
