The nationally 11th-ranked SUNY Cortland men’s lacrosse team scored 12 unanswered goals in a stretch of 33:09 to surge past Morrisville St., 16-5, at the Stadium Complex Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
The Red Dragons improved to 5-0, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-3.
Junior Devin Phelps led Cortland with a career-high eight points on three goals and five assists and senior Andrew Gonzalez added three scores. Sophomore Joey Panariello notched two goals with two helpers and juniors Nate Beresovoy and Liam Erickson each recorded two scores and an assist.
Juniors Nick Bonitatibus and Thomas McNaney as well as freshmen Corey McMahon and Brian Williams netted one goal each for the Red Dragons. Senior T.J. deLyra and sophomore Dean Riley from Homer) each dished out one assist.
Junior goalie Joe Scalise made two saves and registered three ground balls in 42:50 for Cortland. Freshman Jake Craybas stopped three shots over the final 17:10. Senior Mike Hart won 12-of-16 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls, while senior Dave Foster caused two turnovers and collected five ground balls.
Sophomore Nick Geswaldo led Morrisville with three goals and senior Corey Grace and freshman Peter Piña each tallied one score. Junior Brad Biggs notched two assists and freshman Chris Dovi from Cortland high recorded one helper.
Senior goalie Tyler Catalfano turned aside 18 shots for the Mustangs. Sophomore Shawn Walberger won eight faceoffs and collected three ground balls. Junior Noah Gregor caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
The teams split the first four goals of the game. Geswaldo’s two goals for Morrisville sandwiched goals from Panariello and Phelps for Cortland. The Red Dragons then scored 12 straight goals. Three came from Gonzalez, two from Phelps, Beresovoy and Erickson and one from McNaney, McMahon and Bonitatibus. The Mustangs outscored Cortland 3-2 in the final quarter.
The Red Dragons visit Cabrini University (Pa.) Saturday at 2 p.m.
SUNY CORTLAND SENIOR GOALIE Jaclyn Beshlian has been named both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III North Region Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 19.
Beshlian helped Cortland defeat fifth-ranked Catholic University, 13-8, last Wednesday at American University. She made 13 saves against the Cardinals, including nine in the second half, as the Red Dragons (3-1) broke open a close game over the final 30 minutes.
Beshlian recorded a .619 save percentage in the game, and for the season has a 3-1 record with a 7.90 GAA, 32 saves and a .508 save percentage.
Cortland, ranked sixth in the latest Division III national poll, will travel to 13th-ranked Ithaca College Thursday at 4 p.m. That game was originally scheduled for tonight but was moved due to the weather. Cortland will also host Denison College (Ohio) Saturday at 1 p.m.
