Mike Harrington pitched six and two thirds scoreless relief innings with nine strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory and Steven Figueroa finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI as nationally second-ranked Cortland opened SUNYAC play with a 5-2 win at Fredonia.
The game was moved up to Thursday due to projected weather conditions on Saturday, but was still played in a temperature in the mid-30s. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader today starting at 12:30 p.m. on a turf field at Houghton College.
Cortland (13-3 overall) scored on a wild pitch in the first and on a Figueroa two-run single in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Fredonia (8-8, 0-4 SUNYAC) scored twice in the third on back-to-back RBI singles by Liam Kelly and Ciro Frontale to knock out Cortland starter and Homer graduate Jake Casey. Harrington entered and registered a flyout and strikeout with runners on first and third to preserve the lead, and he blanked the Blue Devils the rest of the way on only four hits to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Cortland added insurance runs in the eighth on a Paul Dondero RBI double and in the ninth on a Nate Budge RBI single. Fredonia put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth on singles by Frontale and Kevin Yirinec, but Harrington got the next batter to fly out and fanned the final hitter to end the contest.
Casey allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, over the first two and a third innings for the Red Dragons. Jake Harford started for Fredonia and gave up only five hits and three runs, one earned, in seven frames. He struck out six and walked three.
In addition to Figueroa’s two-hit, two-walk effort, Jon Warner went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, Budge was 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI, and Dondero went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cortland stranded 10 runners, including two each in four different innings. Frontale finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Joshua Crocetti ended 2-for-3 for the hosts.
Morgan Cadwell scored from the free position three minutes, 24 seconds into overtime to lift the nationally 13th-ranked Ithaca women’s lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory versus sixth-ranked Cortland Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons fell to 3-2 on the season, while the Bombers improved to 5-1.
Senior Nicolette Tortorici led Cortland with three goals and one assist. Junior Hannah Elmer, sophomore Carly Stone and freshman Lexie Meager each netted two goals, with Elmer also recording an assist. Senior Kristen Ohberg scored the game-tying goal with three seconds left in regulation and also had an assist.
Senior goalie Jaclyn Beshlian registered 13 saves and three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Junior Katie Wolfe recorded three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Meager added three draws and two caused turnovers, Elmer scooped up three ground balls and junior Liza Ferro, a Cortland High graduate caused two turnovers.
Cadwell finished with four goals and one assist for Ithaca. Ally Runyon scored four goals, Morgan Racicot tallied two goals and one assist and Allison Panara added one goal and one assist. Goalie Kimberly Presuto stopped eight shots. Reid Simoncini caused four turnovers and collected seven ground balls, while Cadwell and Gaby Berne each secured three draws.
Neither team led by more than two goals the entire game. In the first three-minute half of the extra session, Ithaca won the draw and had possession for much of the time, getting off five shots with Beshlian making three saves. The Bombers secured the draw in the second half of the overtime and quickly earned a free-position shot that Cadwell scored on to earn the win.
The Red Dragons host Denison (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
