TULLY – It was a solid day for the Homer Central girls’ lacrosse team.

Mattie Riter and Katlyn Sovocool each scored three goals as the 10th seeded Trojans upset seventh seed Tully 12-7 in the first round of the Section 3 Class D Tournament action Saturday. Homer (9-8 overall) will advance to the quarterfinals Tuesday and travel to second seed Westhill (11-3) for a 6:30 p.m. contest. The Warriors beat the Trojans 13-7 May 10 in a competitive game at George Butts Field. Since that loss, Homer has won three straight games.

The Trojans last competed in post-season play in 2016. Homer edged Chittenango 7-6 on Butts Field in the first round before losing 11-8 at Westhill in the quarterfinals.

“Today we went out and truly played team lacrosse,” Homer coach Morgan Osborne said. “On every part of the field we played hard. We moved the ball beautifully and we were out there just doing what we have been working on all season. We were very proud coaches today and the girls should be proud of their performance. We are ready for practice Monday and to step up to the challenge of playing Westhill.”

Homer started out well and built a 7-5 lead in the first half. The Trojans kept up the good play to take the second half 5-2 and post the 12-7 victory.

Riter had two assists to go with her three goals. Deede Partigianoni scored two goals and handed out two assists for the Trojans. Nina Armideo netted one goal and added two assists while Karly Roos had one goal and one assist. Caraline Riley and Kloey Roos collected one goal each with Annika Roos credited with one assist.
