Crucial CHS road victory

WEEDSPORT — The Cortland High volleyball team continued its push toward sectional qualification Thursday night with a come-from-behind 19-25, 25-9, 25-15, 25-22 non-league win at Weedsport.
The Purple Tigers are now 6-9 overall and need to win one of their remaining two matches — at East Syracuse-Minoa Tuesday and home against Fabius-Pompey Thursday — to reach the .400 winning percentage needed to earn a Section 3 playoff berth.
“When we went out in the first set we were struggling,” CHS coach Cheri Olson said. “Maybe they were still sleepy from the long bus ride but our passing really was not consistent, which made it difficult to get any type of offense going. As the set went on the girls started pulling it together and we had the momentum going into the second set.
“From there we just kept on going. We fixed our passing and picked up the energy level. Weedsport missed very few serves and made very few mental errors. I was proud of our team because we were really good at being aggressive at the net. The girls hit harder than I think they have all season.”
Olson cited middle blockers Katie Dovi and Chelsea Vallilee in that regard, senior Dovi with 10 kills and three blocks and junior Vallilee with 10 kills and four blocks. “They have been playing very well the last few matches,” Olson said, adding that Vallilee also had eight aces as it got to the point that the Warriors’ coach called a timeout every time she went back to serve.
“Lily Carlton also had another great match with nine kills, two aces, and 16 digs,” Olson said of the junior outside hitter. “She is such a consistent and aggressive player that we really are not the same without her on the court.
“Danielle Lynch went in late into the first set and ended the night with 16 aces and two aces. As she is a sophomore, I was really impressed with her last night. She was more aggressive than she has been in some previous matches and her competitive nature shined through.”
Senior libero Megan Howard had 18 digs and junior right side Liza Ferro five blocks, eight digs, two assists and an ace for the winners.
CORTLAND JVs beat Weedsport in two games to improve to 10-4 overall, with no further information reported.
