Izzy Case scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted three minutes into overtime Friday evening to give the visiting Homer Central field hockey team a 2-1 non-league win over Cortland High on Moiseichik Field in the teams’ Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
With the teams playing seven-on-seven for the extra session, Trojans coach McKenna L’Hommedieu said that “The play was back and forth until our offense took the ball, Izzy got in the circle one-on-one with their goalie, took a quick shot and scored.”
Jaclyn DeLine gave the winners, now 4-9 overall, the lead with her first goal of the year early in the first half off an assist by Macy Boice, who leads Homer in scoring with 11 points. Natalie Gier tied the game with her second goal of the season unassisted in the second half for the Purple Tigers (2-12).
The winners had a 17 shot advantage and got five saves from goalie Maddy Mallory while Lexi Walts stopped nine shots in the CHS cage.
“It was a tough first few minutes with Homer scoring right away,” Cortland coach Lisa Caselle said. “The girls were able to pick their heads up and keep pushing through the rest of the game. We dominated the play for most of the second half and had many breakaways up the field. Great games were played by Joy Wodi, Gabby Rosas, Bella Rosas and Lauren Swartz. Overall it was a great game played by both teams.”
Caselle added that both teams had items to sell and took donation,s with all proceeds going to breast cancer awareness, the total amount raised yet to be determined.
Homer visits Moravia Tuesday in a 4 p.m. non-league game while Cortland travels to Cicero-North Syracuse Wednesday for a non-leaguer that will follow the 5:30 p.m. junior varsity contest.
