Panther women find a way, men stumble

DRYDEN — A pair of double-doubles propelled the Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s basketball team to its third win in four games this season Tuesday night as the Panthers downed visiting Herkimer College 68-59.

The Panther men, meanwhile, lost 94-60 to Herkimer, which is ranked fifth nationally among Division III junior college squads

TC3 Women 68, Herkimer College 59: Tyler Evans led the way with 20 points and also pulled down 15 rebounds, as well as adding four assists, for the Panthers (now 1-1 in Region 3), while Jaida Washington had 16 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks. Jessica Cafferty chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds as the hosts had a 61-47 advantage on the boards.

Tompkins Cortland led most of the game despite some shooting problems, not making more than a third of its shots in any quarter. The Panthers led 18-16 after one quarter, 34-30 at halftime and 49-45 heading into the fourth.

Herkimer pulled to within one point at 53-52 in the final stanza before a 3-pointer by Evans and a rebound and put-back by Washington sparked a 10-2 run that sealed the verdict.

Jessica Cafferty chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds for the hosts while Tatiana Minnick had nine points. Jazmin Diggs had a game-high 26 points for the Generals, who fell to 2-3 in the league and overall, while Diamonique Franklin had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

TC3 heads north this weekend for games at North Country CC Friday at 5 p.m. and Clinton CC Saturday at noon.
Herkimer College 94, TC3 Men 60: The Panthers moved to an early 4-point lead before the Generals stormed back and took control, going into the locker room at halftime with a 50-35 lead en route to their fifth win in as many games this season, all against Region 3 squads.

Michael Middleton had 22 points and five steals for TC3, which is 1-2 in Region 3 contests and 1-4 overall, while Devyn Branch added 12 points and David Rodriguez had nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.

Tyquan Scott took game honors with 34 points for the Generals while Todd Spottswood had 10 points. Justin Harley pulled down 11 of the winners 49 rebounds (to 42 for the Panthers).

TC3 visits North Country CC Friday at 7 p.m. and Clinton CC Saturday at 2 p.m.
