OHSL Girls’ Lacrosse: Cortland romps past Chittenango

Senior midfielder Logan Chase scored four goals and assisted on five others and senior midfielder Margaret Reagan also netted four goals Monday night as the Cortland High girls’ lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with a 13-3 non-league win over visiting Chittenango on Moiseichik Field.

Eighth-grade midfielder Hannah Partigianoni scored twice for the Purple Tigers while freshman midfielder Grace Call, junior defender/midfielder Kathleen Starr and sophomore defender/midfielder Lauren Swartz scored one goal each. CHS senior goalie Paige Potter made two saves to four for junior Hailee Watt of Chittenango, which was outshot 21-6 in its season-opener.

Junior midfielders Kaiden Williams, Tiffany Scofield and Maddie Flack had one goal each for the visitors, who trailed 6-2 at halftime.

“You can never discount the intensity that Chittenango brings to game day,” Cortland coach Kindra Catalano said. “They forced a few turnovers early in the game. We didn’t score until nearly six minutes in. They certainly made work for us defensively. Abby Ricottilli (freshman attack; one assist) played one of the best games I have seen her play. She may not have the stats to show it but her off-ball movement, defensive transition and passing was great. Margaret and Logan created a good rhythm at the midfield on both sides of the ball. Lauren and Kathleen have contributed a great deal at midfield the last few games, evolving their roles on the team.

Defensively Morgan Tabel (sophomore), Hannah Aldrich (freshman), Kathleen, Jenicah Brown (freshman) and Elyssa Yonta (sophomore) allowed only three 8-meter shots. This is a team goal of ours this season and I was proud of the team defense we played. Every practice and every game allows us to work on our systems of play. I told the girls in the locker room that our mission every time we come out to play is to reach beyond mediocre. This group is committing to the process and it is really exciting to be a part of. We have to put in some work this week as we prepare for Auburn at home on Friday.”

That contest starts at 6:30 p.m. on Moiseichik Field.

MONDAY NIGHT, THE CORTLAND JVS LOST to Chittenango 12-11. McKenna Morris had six goals and an assist for the Purple Tigers (0-2) while Rylee Morris had two goals, Elizabeth Decker a goal and an assist and Tori Cruz and Madison VanDonsel one goal each. CHS goalie Shyanne Lewis made 10 saves.
