A 34-year-old woman remains in the intensive care unit at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center this morning after police said she was held captive, drugged and raped for a number of days.
Cortland police responded at 12:45 p.m. Monday to 13 Brown Ave. to check on the woman after someone reported to police they believed a woman at the location was in danger.
When police arrived, the resident, 58-year-old Raymond C. Cole Jr. refused to let the them in. However, officers said that while they were there, they saw the woman emerge out of the back door of the residence.
The woman told police Cole had been holding her against her will, injecting her with controlled substances and raping her for days, police said. The woman was taken to the hospital, where her condition was unavailable this morning.
Cole was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, felonies. He was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. Police said Cole had a small quantity of bath salts on his at the time of arrest, although they did not say that was what the woman was injected with.
Cole was being held pending arraignment today in Cortland City Court.
