Two juveniles charged in Walmart shooter hoax

Two juveniles were the source of anonymous phone calls Saturday to the Walmart on Bennie Road in Cortlandville, Cortland County sheriff’s officers said Friday.

The initial report was that a Walmart employee had received two calls about 6:23 p.m. Saturday indicating a gunman had entered the store, police said. The employees called 911 and the sheriff’s department and other police agencies evacuated the building. It reopened about 9 p.m.

Investigators determined it was an isolated incident in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left 30 people dead.

Both juveniles, whose names and addresses were not released, were charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and sixth-degree conspiracy, misdemeanors, police said. They will be petitioned to the Cortland County Probation Department.
