Man arrested in downtown attack

A 55-year-old man is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and has bleeding of the brain after he was attacked Tuesday evening in downtown Cortland.

Brian S. Sanders, 26, of 6594 Route 281, Preble, was arrested around 6 p.m. Tuesday after police said he attacked the 55-year-old near 44 Main St. Police did not provide the victim’s name, but said the two men knew each other.

Police said Sanders punched and kicked the man until he was close to being unconscious and then proceeded to stomp on his head causing multiple fractures.

Sanders then went across the street and got a metal tin can out of the dumpster, crumpled it and broke it apart, creating sharp pieces which he then used to stab the man in the neck and saw at him, police said.

The victim was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he remained this morning in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit. Lt. Michael Strangeway said his worst injuries were sustained from being stomped on.

Sanders was charged with first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies. He is being held at the Cortland City Police Department.
