Gavin Richardson scored one goal and assisted on the other two as the DeRuyter boys’ varsity soccer team posted a 3-1 non-league victory over Blessed Virgin Mary.

“The guys fought hard today,” DeRuyter coach Matt Skeele said. “We had some really good scoring chances in the first half. Our defense played a great first half with Cam Brown leading them in goal and taking charge back there.”

Richardson got his goal in the 13th minute as he converted a great pass from Cam Daley. Five minutes later, Richardson got to the baseline and dropped the ball to Frankie Glisson who found the bottom corner open and buried his shot, The Rockets took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

“The second half, we put more pressure on, but just couldn’t get one to drop,” Skeele said. “Blessed Virgin Mary hit a few good long balls over the top and there was just a miscommunication on defense at the top of the box, that allowed them to finish and get a goal.”

That Blessed Virgin Mary goal made it 2-1 DeRuyter (4-1 overall) with 18 minutes left in the game. The Rockets got an insurance goal with 30 seconds left in the game. Richardson sent a crossing pass into the box and Kenyon Gerst stuck the ball into the back of the net for the 3-1 victory.
