Cortland, Homer find success at home

The Cortland High and Homer Central golf teams found themselves on familiar ground Thursday and both teams scored victories on their home courses.

The Purple Tigers posted a 195-225 SCAC Empire Division win over Fulton at Willowbrook Golf Club.

The Trojans scored OHSL Liberty Division wins over Chittenango and Mexico at Cortland Country Club. Homer had a 219 total, Chittenango shot 237 and Mexico posted a total of 255.

Cortland 195, Fulton 225: “We had another real good score today,” Cortland coach Yale Hughes said. “The 195 was the lowest since we shot a 194 on August 29 against Central Square. We have averaged 201 at Willowbrook this year. The only team that has beaten us all year here is J-D. We’re one win away from tying the most wins in a season (14) in my tenure. The other team that had 14 wins was the 2012 Sectional championship team. I believe that we can match that team.”

David Benjamin and Landon Rozewski both shot two over 37 with Andrew Partigianoni carding a 38 for Cortland (12-3 league, 13-3 overall). Kooper Knabe added his round of 41 and Nick Djafari shot 42. Joe Kane posted a score of 44 that did not count in the scoring.

“David, Landon and Andrew all shot in the 30’s,” Hughes said. “Kooper and Nick were in the low 40’s. That’s a good recipe for lots of wins.”

Robert Voss led Fulton (4-9 league and overall) with his round of 41. Tanner Emmons 44, Matt Woodworth 45, Trey White 47 and Tanner Tetro 48 were the rest for the scoring five. Lucas Nelson had a 53 and did not count.

Cortland will close out the SCAC Empire Division regular season Monday at Willowbrook beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Purple Tigers will compete in sectionals Wednesday at Radisson Greens.

Homer 219, Chittenango 237, Mexico 255: Homer finishes the OHSL Liberty Division season at 4-4 and 7-9 overall after the two wins Thursday.

Lukas Quinn shared medalist honors for the day as he posted the low score 39 for the Trojans. Mitch Riter followed with his round of 40, Bridget Porcaro shot 45, Jacob Ruebush 47 and Cooper Withey 48 to round out the five scorers for Homer. Mike Stiles had his 55 not included in the team scoring.

Ty Kelly from Chittenango (3-3 league, 4-6 overall) matched Quinn’s low round. Tanner Smith fired a round of 46, Seth Boulter 49, Evan Smith 50 and Brenden Fraser 53 to complete the Bears’ five scorers. Maddox Garvey had a round of 56 that did not count.

Mexico (4-3 league, 8-4 overall) got a low score of 43 from Lyle Trimble. Ryan Mosher carded a 45 with Trevor Coe 53, Jake Hill 57 and Andrew Harriger 57 completing the scoring five for the Tigers. Andre Burns posted a 60 that did not count in the team scoring.
