The Homer Central girls’ volleyball team returned to its home court Monday to begin a run of three matches in four days and the first match of that four-day effort was huge.

For the first time in eight years, the Trojans posted a win over Cazenovia. Homer won in straight sets 26-24, 25-11, 25-9 over the visitor. The Trojans improve to 9-2 overall with their sixth straight win. The Lakers drop to 6-2 overall.

“The Caz head coach, Brian Ellithorpe, is a veteran coach and a mentor to me in coaching so it means a lot to show him that we can play and tonight was a long time coming,” Homer coach Jeremy Cook said. “These seniors have been working since seventh grade towards the goal of being one of the top teams in Section 3 and tonight was a step toward that goal. Caz
is always extremely talented and very well coached, but we put together a complete match and were able to pull out the victory.”

Allyson Natale was in attack mode and delivered 11 kills to go with nine digs and one ace to lead Homer. Delaney Hartnett handed out 22 assists with 11 digs and four aces. Izzi Wallace had a team-leading 18 digs along with two aces and one assist. Kaia Hubbard was in double figures in kills with 10 and two blocks. Caitlin Barber served up six aces while Celine Beaudry added six kills and nine digs.

“Allyson had one of her season best performances,” Cook said.”Kaia had another strong offensive performance. Delaney dished out the assists so well tonight, making good choices at every turn it seemed, and Izzi seemed to be everywhere in the three-set win. Caitlin Barber came in as a serving specialist and had six aces to lead the way from the service line tonight.”

Homer won’t have a lot of time to savor this win. The Trojans are back in OHSL Liberty American Division play tonight when Syracuse Tech Central come to Homer High School. 4:30 p.m. is the JV start time with the varsity to follow. Homer travels to Westhill for an OHSL match Thursday.

HOMER JVs got the evening started with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 win over Cazenovia.

“We had a great victory over rivalry Cazenovia,” Homer coach Melissa Sorenson said. “The girls played consistent the entire game. We had a great night.”

The Junior Trojans (9-2 overall) were paced by Kayla Miller with four kills and four aces. Madison Wethje added four aces and two aces. Gracie Conklin delivered four aces, Mya Updyke had three assists and Amanda Rood provided three kills.
