Two organizations are collaborating — The Arts at Grace Series, and the Cortland Free Library — to bring children’s author Bruce Coville to Cortland for a story telling hour 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court St., in Cortland.
This will be a free celebration of the Arts at Grace’ 16th season.
“We are committed to having a youth event annually,” said Jo Ann Wickman of Cortland, an Arts at Grace organizer. The entity, which usually sponsors concerts, has presented talks and visual art on occasion.
“We had to cancel the Young Artists concert last winter due to lack of interest. So we decided to try something entirely different. Bruce Coville is geared to youth, but involves a different art. One we hope appeals,” Wickman said.
Coville will share his love of writing and stories with children of all ages. The program is geared to ages 6 and above, but all ages are welcome.
A social time with refreshments follows. Coville will be available to sign his books, which will be available for purchase with cash or check.
Two youngsters who enter a drawing will be able to choose a Coville-signed book of their own.
A native of Syracuse, Coville has lived in Central New York for most of his life. He began dreaming of becoming a writer as a child, and began working at it when he was 17. His first novel, “The Foolish Giant,” was published in 1977. Since then, he has published more than 100 books, including “My Teacher Is an Alien,” “Into the Land of Unicorns” and “Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher.”
His works have been translated into more than a dozen languages and he has received a number of awards for children’s science fiction. Details are available at brucecoville.com
The Cortland Free Library offers a variety of services to the people of Cortland and the patrons of the Finger Lakes Library System.
