The Homer Central girls’ varsity soccer team honored 10 players in Senior Night ceremonies Monday on George Butts Field, but Christian Brothers Academy spoiled the party with a 4-1 OHSL Liberty American Division victory.
Melina Settineri, Maddy Cole, Alana Auchmoody, Mattie Riter, Madasyn Sonnacchio, Makayla Miller, Mia Linn, Faith Howell, Kaelyn Tallman and Grace Jacobi were recognized for their contributions to the program along with their parents.
“The seniors on the team were able to start the game and end it as the core players on the field,” Homer coach Ben Bowers said. “All are wonderful, incredible young ladies. The energy, kindness, and competitiveness make every day so fun with this team and the seniors emphasize that with this group especially. We as a program are lucky to have had them and I as a coach am so grateful to have been able to coach them their final year. These ladies are extremely incredible. The Homer community and myself cannot wait to see the successes that they are going to have in their lives in the future.”
Christian Brothers Academy (3-1 division, 7-5 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the first half and added two more goals in the second half. Kennedy Paciga scored two goals with Gia Anthony and Tatumn Kohlbrenner each netting one goal for the Brothers.
Cole scored on a penalty kick to give Homer (2-2-1, 4-7-1 overall) its lone goal.
“It was a very physical and hard fought game by both teams,” Bowers said. “CBA was able to capitalize early on a few shots that the rain made it hard to judge direction. We battled back and, off a foul in the box against Mattie Riter, a penalty kick was awarded. Maddy was
able to finish for the goal. We had a few opportunities, but CBA was able to capitalize off a direct kick and a breakaway to seal the deal. We fought hard and never gave up.”
CBA had an 18-5 advantage in shots, plus a 6-1 difference in corner kicks. Catherine Apker made 14 saves in the Trojans’ goal. Emily Jones had four saves for CBA.
Homer will return to Liberty American Division action Saturday as the Trojans host Westhill in a 12 noon game.
