Marathon posts Senior Day shutout

MARATHON — Four goals from four different players.

That was the winning formula as the Marathon varsity field hockey team closed out the home portion of its regular season at Appleby Elementary School with a 4-0 Senior Day victory over Walton in Section 4 Conference play Tuesday. The Olympians (9-6 overall) have one more game in the regular season at Owego Thursday starting at 6 p.m.

“It was a great defensive game by Brie Carter, Breanna Powierski- O’Neill, Macie Hulbert, Madison Card and Brooklin Drake,” Marathon coach Karen Funk said. “We made great use of the whole field. We had some great clears and did a great job of switching sides of the field. We played a real good game.”

Marathon took a 2-0 lead in the first half as Ellery Ensign scored with 9:26 left in the first half and Abby Layton found the goal with 1:28 remaining until the halftime intermission. Brie Carter picked up the assist on Layton’s goal.

The Olympians doubled their total in the second half. Olivia Lisi scored with 26:38 remaining in the game. Eilie Holland finished off the scoring with 8:28 left on the clock.

Marathon took 10 shots and earned eight penalty corners in the game. Walton had four shots and earned five penalty corners. Korah Smith made four saves in the Marathon goal. Kora Young had five saves for Walton.

The Olympians will learn their Section 4 Class C Tournament seeding and who their first post-season opponent will be tonight before facing Owego Thursday.

Weedsport 5, Homer 0: The Homer Central field hockey team closed out its home season with a 5-0 loss to Weedsport in OHSL Division action on Senior Night at George Butts Field.

Suzie Nemec paced the Warriors (6-1-1 division, 12-2-1 overall) with two goals and two assists. Emma Stark added one goal and one assist while Erin Grady and Faith Grady each scored one goal. Mariah Quigley made nine saves for Weedsport.

Tasie Fox made 14 saves for the Trojans (0-7-1 division, 0-13-1 overall).

Homer will close out the season Thursday when the Trojans travel to Auburn for a 6:30 p.m. non-league game.
