Firefighters discovered the body of 35-year-old Solon man early Saturday morning while battling a fire in Solon.
Cortlandville, McGraw and Homer firefighters responded at 2:21 a.m. to a structure fire on Lapp Hill Road in the town of Solon. Cortlandville Fire Chief Gere Henry said the building was four poles with a roof that housed 60 round bales of hay.
As fire crews were trying to put out the fire they found someone, “who appeared to have perished as a result of the fire,” states a news release from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department.
The person has been identified as Paul W. Burdick III of 4382 Lapp Hill Road.
Henry said it took several hours to get the fire under control. The Solon Highway Department also assisted fire crews at the scene by removing large bales of hay.
Henry said fire crews were back at the site Sunday because the area had begun smoldering again.
The county corner’s office and sheriff’s office and state Fire Investigation Team are investigating.
The sheriff’s department said anyone with information on the fire can call the criminal investigation division at 607-758-6151.
