The 2019 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls’ Soccer Championships will take place this weekend at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex, Cortland High School and Homer High School.
Twenty teams from across New York State will vie for state titles in five divisions. Hosted by the Section III Girls’ Soccer Committee in partnership with the Cortland Regional Sports Council, the event kicks off Friday with a banquet at SUNY Cortland’s Corey Union. Semifinal round action gets underway Saturday with the championship games slated for Sunday at SUNY Cortland.
“We have several turf field options available to us,” Sports Council Executive Director Machell Phelps said. “Given the weather forecast, we will need that kind of flexibility. Our local hotels will be booked with players, coaches, spectators and officials. This is exactly the kind of event we want to host in the Cortland community.”
Matchups include teams from Section 3 — Central Valley Academy from Class B will play Babylon from Section 11; Jamesville-Dewitt will face off against Shoreham-Wading River, also from Section 11. Class AA has Fayetteville-Manlius playing Massapequa from Section 8 and Class D Poland plays Northville from Section 2.
“We hope the community will welcome these athletes and spectators,” Phelps said. “Making it to a State Championship — in any sport — is quite an accomplishment. These participants will always remember their time in Cortland for this reason.”
A lot of work goes into preparing and hosting a tournament such as this and the CRSC is especially appreciative of the partnerships we have with Homer High School, Cortland High School, SUNY Cortland and Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Without these venues putting in the time and effort to host games, the Cortland community would not be able to host an event like this. The general public is encouraged to attend. There is an admission fee.
