The Cortland volleyball team has plenty of varsity experience heading into the new season.
The Purple Tigers are returning the majority of their starters after going 11-7 last season. Longtime coach Cheri Olson hopes her team can improve on a 5-4 league record and third place finish last season.
“This is a strong senior class,” Olson said. “The newcomers are going to have to work hard to take starting spots.”
Seniors Kayci Olson and Grace Call are two of the Purple Tigers’ top returners.
Kayci Olson was the team’s most valuable player and first team all-league last season, as well as a Section 3, Class A all-star. Olson led Cortland with 220 kills and 191 digs last season, and added 22 aces, six assists and 17 blocks.
Call was an OHSL second team all-star last season. As a junior, she posted a team-high 355 assists.
“Kayci and Grace have been on the team since they were freshmen. … (Kayci) hopes to play in college. Grace started out as an outside hitter as a freshman, but when we needed a setter we moved her there as a sophomore,” Cheri Olson said. “She has improved every year and is a good leader on the court.”
While the Purple Tigers boast experience, they are shorthanded in the middle.
“Due to an injury, we only have two middles this season,” Cheri Olson said. “One is returning and one is new to varsity.”
Cortland was to begin the regular season at home against Cato-Meridian Monday, but that match was postponed. The Purple Tigers will host Port Byron Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
