Olympians take down Eagles on mat

MARATHON — With a strong performance at the upper weight classes and some forfeits, the Marathon varsity wrestling built an early lead and posted a 36-24 victory over Whitney Point Tuesday in Interscholastic Athletic Conference action at Appleby Elementary School.

It was the first home match of the season for the Olympians who improve to 2-0 in IAC matches.

The teams traded forfeits at 160 pounds and 170 pounds to kick things off. Killian Prentice got the win for Whitney Point at 160 with Mike Wales receiving the same at 170 for the Olympians.

As the action moved onto the mat, Marathon recorded three straight pinfalls to build a 24-6 advantage. Trevor Hurlburt needed 2:53 to stick Austin Quail at 182 pounds and start the Olympians rolling. Evan Ticknor was next at 195 pounds as he used 1:24 to plank Connor Coyne. At 220 pounds, Chris Barned used just 38 seconds to pin Colin Week.

Marathon’s wrestlers ride a strong effort in the upper weight classes to victory over Whitney Point.

Quinton Sengsounthone received a forfeit at 285 pounds as the Marathon lead grew to 30-6.

As the match swung back to the lightweights, there were no matches at 106 or 113 pounds. Edmond Rapp received a forfeit at 120 pounds for the Olympians for their final points of the night and a 36-6 cushion. There was no match at 126 pounds and that sealed the Marathon win with just four matches remaining.

Whitney Point took all four of those matches to narrow the final margin to 12 points. Aiden Rosa scored a 14-10 decision over Cayne Durranceau at 132 pounds before Kristian Nilsen recorded a pinfall over Brittain Keller at the 5:59 mark of their 138 pound bout. Jordan Canniff stuck Tim Morehouse in 3:13 at 145 pounds. Hunter Ballard closed out the match with a 9-3 decision over Ethan Morrison at 152 pounds.

Marathon will be back in action tonight as the Olympians travel to Groton for an IAC match at 6 p.m. Marathon will compete in the Elmira Christmas Tournament Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
