Mustangs grab late win over Trojans

The Homer varsity wrestling team was locked in a tight battle with visiting Marcellus in OHSL Liberty Division action Wednesday.

The outcome was not decided until the final whistle as the Mustangs pulled out a 36-33 victory. It was the league opener for Marcellus who improves to 2-0 overall. Homer slips to 1-1 in league and overall action.

The match was tied 27-27 when Dylan Price received a forfeit at 138 pounds to put Marcellus on top 33-27. Kaiden Haynes got Homer to within 33-30 after his 4-1 decision at 145 pounds over Ryan Moses.

The pivotal match really came at 152 pounds as Tim Okhman scored a 7-6 overtime decision over David Morse for three Marcellus points. Okhman took a 4-3 lead in the first period, but Morse tied the match at 4-4 after two periods. Each wrestler earned a point in the third period for a 5-5 tie. Morse chose the down position for the first 30 second overtime period and got an escape point for a 6-5 lead. With Okhman in the down position to start the second 30 second extra session, one penalty point was awarded to Okhman from a locking hands call against Morse to tie things at 6-6. Okhman then picked up an escape point for the 7-6 victory.

Homer still had a chance to tie when Jakob Denkenberger stepped on the mat for the final match at 160 pounds. After two scoreless periods, Denkenberger threw everything he could at Quinten Weaver in the final period, but he could not get the pinfall. Denkenberger got a well earned 5-1 decision while Marcellus celebrated the 36-33 victory.

The first five matches in the upper weight classes saw Homer take a slim 15-10 lead.

Zander Johnson put the Trojans in front at 3-0 with a 7-1 decision over Jonas Kazor to start the night at 170 pounds. Trevor Widrick countered for Marcellus at 182 pounds as he pinned Allan Markley at the 1:18 mark. The Mustangs’ lead grew to 10-3 after Zachary Grolling posted a 10-0 majority decision over Brycen Coggins. Tayvn Malchak closed the gap to one point for Homer with a pinfall over Nathaniel Farino at the 3:04 mark of their 220 pound bout. Sam Sorenson pushed the Trojans in front 15-10 after his win over Wilvon McKee by pinfall at the 4:17 mark of their match at 285 pounds. There was no match at 99 pounds.

Marcellus went back in front 16-15 at 106 pounds as Colin Scherer received a forfeit. Ethan Ciota pinned Chancler Kiner in 1:30 at 113 pounds and Carl Santariello scored a 20-5 technical fall over Gavin Bennett at 120 pounds to give the Mustangs their biggest lead at 27-15.

Homer didn’t fold and answered with two big wins that evened the score at 27-27 and set up the exciting finish. Jacob Rice got the rally started at 126 pounds when he pinned Adam Barbosa in 27 seconds. Carter Monroe followed up at 132 pounds as he pinned Jacob Kermes in 3:04 to tie the match. Marcellus did just enough to seal the victory.

Homer will return to mat action Saturday. The Trojans host Jamesville- DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy in a 1 p.m. non-league match in the high school gymnasium.
