SKANEATELES — The Homer Central boys’ varsity basketball team has battled all season long without a lot to show for it in the win column, but that all changed Tuesday night.
The Trojans played fourth good quarters and came away with a 61-56 OHSL Liberty Division victory over previously undefeated and seventh-ranked in Class B Skaneateles. Homer improves to 2-4 in Liberty American Division play and 3-4 overall. Skaneateles drops to 5-1 in Liberty National play and 7-1 overall.
“Huge win for our confidence moving forward this season,” Homer coach Rex Ryan said. “We made defense and rebounding a priority since our last game and it definitely paid off tonight.
Everyone that got in the game H.S. Boys’ Basketball made big contributions. Our Homer 61 seniors, Derek Fickett and Skaneateles 56 Mikyle Franklin, showed big time leadership tonight. Every time we needed a big bucket or defensive stop it felt like they were involved. Jarrett Wilbur picked up two early fouls in the first half. He really got it going in the second half. He had some timely buckets. Hunter White, Jake Calabro and Jon Barnes did an amazing job being spark plugs. They took care of the basketball and came up with some big defensive plays. I’m proud of our guys for overcoming adversity and playing hard even after a couple of losses. We will continue to work hard and improve moving forward. We greatly appreciate all who continue to support us this season.”
Homer got off to a good start on the road and led 14-11 after the first quarter. The Trojans continued to build their lead to 32- 26 by halftime. Jake Atkins had two big 3-pointers in the second quarter to help Homer maintain the lead. Skaneateles closed to within 44-40 as the third quarter ended. It all came down to the fourth quarter.
Fickett scored eight of his 18 points in the final quarter and Wilbur added seven of his 13 points to offset the eight points from Jack Whitley and a pair of Lakers’ 3-pointers to secure the 61-56 win.
Franklin added 18 points to the Trojans’ total with Atkins netting 12 points.
Whitley had a game high 19 points for Skaneateles. Nate Fouts chipped in with 11 points and Nick Wamp had nine points.
Homer boys’ basketball will travel to McGraw for a non-league game Thursday at 7 p.m. The JV game will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
Homer JVs boys dropped a 58-38 game at Skaneateles Tuesday.
“The score doesn’t show how we played,” Homer coach Jackson Dowdle said. “We had our best start all year. Everyone was contributing and everyone was being aggressive. When they switched to zone in the third quarter it slowed down our offense. They leaked out and got some easy lay-ups. It’s tough, but it was a good learning experience and we will get better.”
Homer trailed 18-13 after the first quarter, but took a 25-23 lead into halftime. The defensive switch by Skaneateles allowed the Lakers to score 35 points in the second half while holding the Trojans to 13 points.
Wyatt Wilbur would lead the Homer offense with 16 points. Ian Gilbert added eight points and Evan Butts netted seven points.
Colin Gaglione powered Skaneateles with 15 points. Colin Sweet chipped in with 11 points and Marcus McClanahan had 10 points.
