The Homer Central boys’ varsity basketball team got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but picked the intensity the remainder of the game. It could not prevent the Trojans from having their four-game winning streak snapped Friday night in front of their home crowd.
Homer scored just five points in the first quarter, but kept battling before falling 60-56 to visiting Fulton in the non-league contest. Homer slips to 6-5 overall. Fulton improves to 9-3 overall.
“We need to improve on our execution,” Homer coach Rex Ryan said. “Guys played hard, but too many mental mistakes. We need to play 32 minutes every game. Tonight showed even when we aren’t playing our best, we still can compete against some talented competition. Fulton is a very good team and we had our chances to take a lead or tie the game up but we couldn’t convert. The support from the community this season has been amazing. We appreciate everyone who has made it to our games this season.”
After falling behind 10-5 after one quarter, Homer closed the deficit to 27-25 by halftime as Mikyle Franklin began to heat up. The senior guard netted 10 of his game high 22 points in that second quarter rally.
Jack Broderick hit a couple of big 3-pointers in the third quarter to help Fulton build a 44-39 advantage through three quarters.
Homer tried to complete another comeback bid in the fourth quarter. Franklin scored eight points and Derek Fickett added six points, but the Trojans could not offset the eight points by Dominic Abbot and seven points from Marcus Shepard as the Red Raiders held on for the 60- 56 victory.
Fickett finished the night with 17 points for the Trojans. Jarrett Wilbur added 10 points.
Abbott totaled 21 points for Fulton. Shepard added 18 points and Broderick chipped in with 15 points to aid the Red Raiders cause.
Homer was scheduled to travel to Indian River today, but the non-league game was postponed. The Trojans are now off until Jan. 27 when they head to Solvay for an OHSL Liberty Division clash with the Bearcats at 6:30 p.m. The JV contest will tip off at 5 p.m.
Homer JV boys fell behind 21-4 in the first quarter and never recovered during a 70-43 loss to Fulton.
The Trojans played better in the second and fourth quarters with 18 points and 12 points respectively, but also struggled in the third quarter as they scored just nine points during that segment.
Evan Butts led the Homer offense with 11 points. Izaiah Beard added nine points to the Junior Trojans attack.
Robert Voss led Fulton with 13 points. Ryan Carroll and Trevor Hendrickson each added 11 points.
