Purple Lion boys earn Division II championship

ITHACA — With four winners and multiple place finishers, the Dryden High boys’ claimed the Section IV Division 2 Indoor Track and Field Championship Friday at Ithaca College.

The Purple Lions had 98.5 points with runner-up Lansing getting 79 points. Marathon finished 13th among the 18 scoring teams with five points.

Waverly won the Division 2 girls’ championship with 85 points. Dryden tied Sidney for seventh place with 22 points while Groton tied for 17th with six points and Marathon was tied for 21st with two points.

Atheltes who finished in first, second or third place are Section 4 First Team All-Stars while those in fourth, fifth or sixth are Section 4 Second Team All-Stars.

“It was an awesome night for the kids,” Dryden coach Lee Stuttle said. “14 personal records, one school record and the boys winning the team sectional title. I am so proud to be the coach of these boys and girls.”

BOYS’ HIGHLIGHTS

Jakob Greenwood posted a pair of first place finishes for Dryden. Greenwood won the 600-meter run in 1:25.12 and he took first in the 300m dash after a time of 36.53.

Bryant DePaull had a win for the Purple Lions in the 55m hurdles with a time of 9.54 (9.31 in semi) seconds and he was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet-11.5 inches.

The 800m relay team was the fourth Dryden winner. Aidan Kalousdian, Zach Willson, Nathan Turner and Braedon Lib- bey were clocked in 1:39.20.

Other place finishers for Dryden included George Murphy-Wilkins, who was second in the 1,000m run in 2:51.32. Libbey was second (6.84) in the 55m dash and third (20- 5.5) in the long jump. The 1,600m relay team of Steven Morrow, Bradely Hume, DePaull and Greenwood took second place in 3:46.30. Morrow was third (1:32.79) in the 600m run and third (38.86) in the 300m dash. The 3,200m relay team of Murphy-Wilkins, Jackson Crocker, Luke Maza and Owen Strickland placed fourth with a time of 9:44.22. Michael Cavanaugh placed fourth in the weight throw with a new school record toss of 40-5 and he placed fifth (35-8) in the shot put. Hiram Hackworth was fifth (39-2) in the weight throw. Crocker was fifth (10:41.60) in the 3,200m run. Hume took sixth place (5-6) in the high jump and he was sixth (39.6) in the 300m dash. Kalousdian was sixth in the 55m dash with a time of 6.98 seconds.

For Marathon, Trenton O’Neil placed fourth with the 300m dash with a time of 39.29 and he placed sixth in the pole vault by clearing the bar at eight feet even.

GIRLS’ HIGHLIGHTS

Teghan Garris led the Dryden girls as she placed second in the shot put with a distance of 33-2.25.

The 800m relay team of Alex Brotherton, Hollice Finver, Naomi Cator-Szymanski and Kya Cook took third place in 1:59.33.

Emily Miller was fourth (11:19.19) in the 3,000m run and Cator-Szymanski was fourth in the 55m hurdles with a time of 10.04 seconds.

For Groton, Emma Kennett was fourth in the long with a leap of 15-11.5 as she was fifth in the 55m dash with a time of 7.90 seconds.

For Marathon, the 3,200m relay team placed fifth in 12:08.68.
