SOLVAY — The Homer Central boys’ varsity basketball team overcame an early deficit to be within striking distance as the fourth quarter of Monday’s OHSL Liberty Division game at Solvay began.

That’s when the Bearcat guard Brock Bagozzi took over. Bagozzi scored 10 of his game high 19 points to let Solvay pull away for a 60-47 victory over the Trojans. Solvay improved to 11-1 in the Liberty National Division and 12-3 overall. Homer fell to 3-5 in the Liberty American Division and 7-5 overall.

“The guys played really hard tonight,” Homer coach Rex Ryan said.

“The final score didn’t reflect how close the game was. We just need to find a way to take better care of the basketball and be more consistent on the defensive end. I’m really proud the way we compete every game. There hasn’t been a game this season where I felt we’ve been completely overmatched. We cut the lead down to two at a point but just couldn’t get the necessary stop or basket on our end. Our goal remains the same as it was when we were 0-0 at the beginning of the season, that’s making it to sectionals. We will continue to work hard and compete.”

Solvay took a 17-14 lead in the first quarter, but the Trojans went cold in the second quarter as the Bearcats opened 34-22 advantage by halftime.

Homer came out strong in the third quarter. Derek Fickett scored nine points as the Trojans netted 20 points to close the gap to 46-42 entering the fourth quarter. Bagozzi’s first points of the final quarter were from 3-point range and it sparked Solvay offensively and the Bearcat defense held the Trojans to five points and opened a 13 point advantage as the final horn sounded.

Elijah Wright added 13 points to the Solvay offense with Jaimen Bliss netting nine points.

Fickett scored 17 points to lead Homer. Jake Atkins added 12 points and Jarrett Wilbur netted 10 points for the Trojans.
