The Homer Central varsity wrestling team played host to the OHSL Liberty-Patriot Division Tournament Saturday.
The Trojans found their home surroundings to their liking as six wrestlers reached the championship finals and three of them were crowned tournament champions. In all, 15 Homer wrestlers placed in the top six as the Trojans were second in the team standings with 240.5 points. Marcellus took the team title with 302.5 points followed by Homer, Hannibal 191, Phoenix 164, Cazenovia 138.5, Port Byron 87, A-P-W/ Pulaski 61.5 and Jordan-Elbridge 47.5.
Jacob Rice went 4-0 with two pins to take first place at 120 pounds. Rice scored a 13-7 deci- sion over Carlton Alder from A-P-W/Pulaski in the championship match.
Jakob Denkenberger was 4-0 with three pins as the 152 pound champion. Denkenberger pinned Chad Thompson from Hannibal at the 2:56 mark of their championship match.
Sam Sorenson went 5-0 with one pin to become the champion at 220 pounds and he earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award in the upper weight classes. Sorenson won a narrow 1-0 decision over Jordan-Elbridge’s Jared Lawrence in the championship final.
Reaching the championship finals, but settling for second place were three Trojans. Kaiden Haynes went 4-1 with one pinfall at 132 pounds. Haynes lost a 3-1 decision to Ryan Moses from Marcellus in the championship final.
Zander Johnson was the runner-up at 160 pounds after going 4-1 with two pins. Johnson was pinned by Jadan Bruno from Phoenix in 50 seconds in their title match.
Tavyn Malchak settled for second place at 195 pounds. Malchak was pinned in the nals by Nathaniel Farino from Marcellus in 1:27 after going 4-1 with three pins for the day.
Seven Homer wrestlers reached the consolation finals and four of them took third place honors. Those four were Jeffrey Stauber who went 3-2 with one pin at 106 pounds, Carter Monroe was 3-2 with two pin at 126 pounds, Allan Markley was 3-2 with three pins at 182 pounds and Brycen Coggins was 3-2 with three pins at 195 pounds.
Settling for fourth place were Ryan Opanhoske at 132 pounds after going 2-3 with one pin, Owen Murphy with a 1-3 record and one pin at 152 pounds and Blair Wakula with his 2-3 record and two pins at 170 pounds.
Collin Stevens was 2-2 with two pins at 99 pounds to take fifth place.
Jagger Tanner went 1-4 with a pin for sixth place at 285 pounds.
Also competing for Homer but not placing were David Morse at 145 pounds, Zachary Apker at 160 pounds, and Raiden Sturdevant at 285 pounds.
After the strong showing, the Homer wrestlers will now wait to find out where they are seeding for sectionals. The Section 3 seeding meeting will take place today with the Class AA-D Tournaments scheduled at various locations this coming Saturday.
