Purple Tigers second seed in Class A

DeRuyter 2nd seed, McGraw 6th in ‘D’

The Cortland High girls’ varsity volleyball team will head into Section 3 Tournament action Thursday.

The Purple Tigers (17-1 overall) are the second seed in Class A and will host seventh-seed Whiteboro (9-9) Thursday in Shafer Gymnasium. A start time of 6 p.m. has been announced.

Other Class A quarterfinal round games have eighth-seed Rome Free Academy (9-9) at top seed Carthage (17-0) at 5:30 p.m., fifth-seed Indian River (11-6) at fourth-seed New Hartford (15-1) at 6 p.m. and sixth-seed Watertown (9-8) at third-seed Chittenango (16-1) at 6 p.m.

The Class A semifinals are Feb. 11 at the higher seeded teams. The Class A championship match is Feb. 15 at Jamesville-DeWitt with a 3 p.m. start time.

IN CLASS D, DeRuyter (14-2) is the second seed and McGraw (8-8) is the sixth seed.

First-round matches are tonight with 10th-seed Faith Heritage (8-11) at seventh-seed Owen D. Young (6-6). The winner of this match will travel to DeRuyter Thursday for quarterfinal- round action.

Ninth-seed Town of Webb (8-10) travels to eighth-seed Fabius-Pompey (9-11) in the other first-round match. The winner of this match gets a trip to top-seed Morrisville-Eaton (15-2) Thursday.

Two Thursday quarterfinals are set as McGraw heads to third-seed Sandy Creek (12-5) while fifth-seed Stockbridge Valley (9-6) travels to fourth-seed Remsen (12-7).

Class D semifinal round matches are Feb. 11 at the higher seeded teams. The Class D championship match is Feb. 15 at Jamesville-DeWitt with a 1 p.m. start time.
