Sorenson wins ‘B’ crown at 220

Homer freshman one of three local wrestlers in finals

ILION — The pressure of being the top seed at 220 pounds for the Section 3 Class B Wrestling Championships did not faze Homer Central’s Sam Sorenson Saturday.

The Trojan freshman was one of three Cortland High and Homer High wrestlers to reach the championship finals in their respective weight class and Sorenson was the only one to walk off the mat a Section 3 Class B champion.

Sorenson needed just two matches to improve to 32-3 overall.

He posted a 5-1 semifinal decision over Anthony Crofoot from Hannibal/Cato-Meridian before meeting Mexico’s Jacob O’Reilly in the finals, where Sorenson posted a 3-1 decision over the tournament’s second seed in the division.

Homer junior Jacob Rice was the second seed at 120 pounds and that’s where he finished after dropping a 15-1 majority decision to Central Valley Academy’s Mason Bush, the top seed for the host school of the tournament.

Rice (21-5) went 2-1 on the day with a 56 second pinfall over Dominic Greenwood from Hanninbal/Cato- Meridian in the quarterfinals and a technical fall over Mexico’s George Smith in the semifinals.

Cortland senior Noah Wurst (20-14) matched his second seed by placing second after losing in the championship final at 145 pounds to Central Valley Academy’s Ande Klosner by pinfall at the 2:50 mark.

Wurst was 2-1 with one pinfall. He scored a 9-7 overtime decision over Quinten Weaver from Marcellus in the quarterfinals and pinned Mexico’s Derrick Scirabba in 53 seconds in the semifinals.

Jeffrey Stauber from Homer placed third at 106 pounds while Trojan teammate Tavyn Malchak finished fourth at 195 pounds as did Purple Tigers Luca Canzano at 160 pounds and Jarrod Bush at 170 pounds.

Stauber (19-12) was 2-1 included a pinfall of Oneida’s Hunter Dubois in the consolation final to avenge his loss to Dubois in the quarterfinals. Malchak (17-12) was 2-2 during the competition with two pinfalls.

Canzano (15-15) was 3-2 with one pinfall for the day. Bush (20-15) was 2-2 with one pinfall.

The top four finishers from each weight class advance to the Section 3 Division II Championships at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena this coming Saturday.

Homer had three wrestlers earn fifth place finishes and three more placed sixth at the end of the day.

Carter Monroe (14-13) finished fifth after going 2-2 with two pins at 126 pounds,

Blair Wakula (13-14) posted a 2-2 record at 170 pounds for fifth place.

Allan Markley (20-12) went 2-2 with one pinfall at 182 pounds to earn fifth place.

Lukas Quinn (8-8) went 1-2 with a pinfall at 106 pounds to place sixth.

Jakob Denkenberger (15-13) was sixth after his 1-3 day at 152 pounds.

Zander Johnson (21-14) was sixth at 160 pounds after his 1-3 day that featured one pinfall.

Cortland had one fifth place finisher.

Marcus Hines (18-17) was 2-2 with one pinfall. at 152 pounds.

While they didn’t win a match, Collin Stevens (96 pounds, 9-8), Ryan Opanhoske (138, 19-16) and David Morse (145, 10-19) all competed for Homer as did Devin Legacy (160, 5-10) for Cortland.

Central Valley Academy took the team title with 212 points while South Jefferson was the runner-up with 183 points. Homer placed sixth with 113.5 points and Cortland was ninth with 53 points.
