Rockets ousted in semifinals

DERUYTER — The DeRuyter girls’ varsity volleyball team has had a great season, but it all came to an end on its home court Tuesday in the Section 3 Class D Tournament semifinals.

The second seeded Rockets lost in four sets to third seed Sandy Creek, the same team that eliminated McGraw this past Saturday.

Sandy Creek (14-5 overall) won the first set 25-11, but DeRuyter (15-3) evened things at one set apiece after taking the second set 25-22. The Comets regained control in the third set and won 25-17. Sandy Creek closed out the match in the fourth set by a 25-12 count.

Jaidan Degear had another solid game for DeRuyter with 10 digs and seven kills. Kali Lidell handed out 16 assists, five digs and three aces while Alynna Kanaby led the Rockets with 17 digs to go with two aces. Jet Williams recorded three kills and three blocks, Graycee Forrest added four digs and three kills, Kayla Buchovecky delivered four kills, Kaitlin Donaghue served up three aces, Keely Worlock had two digs and Abby Whitt recorded three digs.

Sarah Balcom powered Sandy Creek with 18 kills and four blocks. Maiya Hathway tallied 25 assists, eight aces and four digs. Elizabeth Glazier served up nine aces, six kills and four blocks. Deanna Hathway recorded 10 digs and two kills. Hailey Miller had seven kills and Maddy Lamica provided two kills for the Comets.

After eliminating back-to-back Central Counties League opponents, Sandy Creek will now wait for the result of tonight’s semifinal match between topseed Morrisville-Eaton (16-2) and fourth-seed Remsen (13-7) to know its next opponent. The Section 3 Class D Championship match takes place Saturday at Jamesville-DeWitt, beginning at 1 p.m.
