The Homer Central boys’ varsity basketball team wrapped up the OHSL Liberty American Division season with a 56-46 victory over visiting Chittenango Thursday night.
The Trojans finish at 6-8 in division play and they are 9-9 overall. Chittenango falls to 5-10 in the division, 6-14 overall.
“Really proud of this group of guys,” Homer coach Rex Ryan said. “We’ve been through a lot of adversity this season and we pulled through to qualify for sectionals. Our captains –– Jarrett Wilbur, Mikyle Franklin and Derek Fickett –– really stepped up and played great in the second half. This season it’s all been about energy and effort. This game was a great example of that. We had nothing going for the first quarter then we turned up our effort/energy and played great defense in the second quarter. Defensive effort leads directly to success on the offensive end. Jake Calabro and Jon Barnes played great minutes off the bench tonight as well, contributing to our success on both ends of the floor. I can’t thank students, parents and community members enough for their continued support this season. Playing at home has truthfully been a special experience for these student athletes this season. We hope to have the opportunity to play a home game in sectionals.”
Homer did start slowly as Chittenango built a 16-6 lead with Bryce Bishop having eight points with the help of two 3 pointers. It was a totally different second quarter as the Trojans’ defense held the Bears to two points while scoring 14 points of their own to take a 20-18 advantage into halftime. Franklin had six points in the quarter while Fickett added four points.
The third quarter was evenly played with Chittenango holding a 12-11 edge while Homer stayed in front 31-30. Bishop had pair of 3-pointers in the quarter for the Bears while Wilbur countered with seven points for the Trojans.
The Trojans exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter to seize control of the game. Fickett had 10 points in the quarter for Homer with Wilbur adding seven points.
Homer had three players in double figures. Wilbur finished the night with 17 points. Fickett added 16 points and Franklin contributed 12 points.
Tyrus Kelly led Chittenango and all scorers with 18 points. Bishop ended the night with 14 points.
Homer will have two non-league games to close out the regular season. The Trojans will travel to Chenango Valley Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. non-league game. The JV game will begin at 3:45 p.m. Homer will head to Indian River Monday for a Presidents’ Day 12:30 p.m. tipoff to close out the regular season. The JV game begins at 11 a.m. Monday.
