DeRuyter boys earn top seed in Class D

The DeRuyter boys’ basketball team has the highest seed among the local school has it’s now time for Section 3 Tournament action.

The Rockets (20-0 overall) are the number-one seed in Class D. DeRuyter will host 16th-seed Belleville-Henderson (7-12) in first round action Friday at 7 p.m.

Staying in Class D, McGraw (14-6) is the seventh seed and the Eagles will host 10th-seed New York Mills (11-8) in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday.

In Class B boys, Homer will get a home game and it will be a first-round contest tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans (10-10 overall) are the 14th seed and will host 19th-seed Hannibal (8-12). The winner of this game earns a second-round contest at third-seed General Brown (16-4) Saturday at 2 p.m.

In Class A girls, Cortland (13-6) has struggled in the past couple of weeks, but the Purple Tigers are the fourth seed and will host fifth-seed Whitesboro (12-8) in quarterfinal-round play Monday at 6 p.m.

In Class B girls, Homer (10-10) is the 15th seed and will host 18th-seed Camden (10-10) tonight at 6 p.m. prior to the Homer boys’ contest. There are 23 teams seeded in Class B, so this really is the first round in this class. The winner between Homer and Camden will travel to second-seed South Jefferson (18-2) for a second-round game Saturday at 6 p.m.

In Class D girls, both DeRuyter and McGraw will have first-round games. McGraw (12-7) is the seventh seed and will host 10th-seed Watertown IHC (10-9) in the first round Friday at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to play second-seed Hamilton (19-1) in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 6 p.m.

DeRuyter (6-10) is the 12th seed and will travel to fifth-seed Poland (15-5) for a first-round game Friday at 6 p.m. The winner of this game will meet either fourth-seed Lyme (15-4) or 13th-seed Stockbridge Valley (5-13) Tuesday.
