The Homer Central boys’ varsity basketball team had to battle all night long, but the Trojans prevailed in Section 3 Class B Tournament first round play Thursday night.
Jarrett Wilbur scored 20 points, including a five for six effort from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, to lift the 14th-seeded Trojans to a 51-46 win over 19th-seed Hannibal in the second game of a post-season doubleheader at Homer High School.
Homer (11-10 overall) will advance to a second round game at third seed General Brown (16-4) Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip off.
“Awesome team effort by the guys tonight,” Homer coach Rex Ryan said. “We stuck to the game plan and executed when we needed to. We made adjustments and the guys went out and did exactly what was expected. Wyatt Wilbur did an amazing job of taking care of the basketball tonight at point (guard) with Mikyle Franklin out. Defensively, Jake Atkins, Jake Calabro and Jon Barnes did an amazing job getting deflections and staying active. Jake Calabro had a huge nine points tonight. Jarrett Wilbur and Derek Fickett continued their success of late and did an awesome job protecting the rim and finishing around the rim. I can’t thank everyone enough for the support we’ve had at home this season. It has made this season a special one for these student athletes.”
Homer found itself trailing 14-12 after the first quarter despite Fickett scoring eight points. Jarrett Wilbur came alive in the second quarter as his seven points helped the Trojans net 14 points and tie the game at 26-26 by halftime.
A key 3-pointer by Wyatt Wilbur in the third quarter helped Homer take a 36-33 lead through three quarters. With the game still in the balance, Homer did enough in the fourth quarter, including Jarrett Wilbur’s free throws, to post the 51-46 victory.
In addition to Jarrett Wilbur’s 20 points, Fickett reached double figures with 13 points for the Trojans. Jake Calabro added nine points to the Trojans’ total while Wyatt Wilbur chipped in with five points.
Jack Smith and Kyle Dixon each scored 14 points to lead Hannibal who finished 8-13 on the season. Austin Calkins added nine points and James Somers netted five points for the visitors.
Homer did not qualify for sectional play last year, but the Trojans did reach the Section 3 Class B semifinals in the 2017-18 season. Thursday night’s win was the first step for this team in trying to repeat that run two years ago.
