ALBANY — Homer Central’s Sam Sorenson has advanced to the semifinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II Wrestling Championships.
The Trojan freshman improved to 37-3 after a pair of victories at 220 pounds Friday at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Sorenson began his day with a pinfall over 13th-seed senior Dustin Goddeau (24-8) from Peru in Section 7 at the 3:29 mark in the first round. He followed up with a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals over fifth-seed senior Conner Walsh (34- 5) from Olean in Section 6.
Sorenson returned to the mat at 10 a.m. this morning and it could be a short day with just two matches if he can win his semifinal match against the top seed who is Cobleskill-Richmondville junior Jeff Crooks (15-0) from Section 2. Crooks placed fourth at 220 pounds last year.
Should Sorenson lose, he still has a shot at third or fifth place in the consolation bracket. The championship finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight.
Groton senior Kyle Willard is still alive though the sixth seed at 126 pounds is in the consolation bracket after going 2-1 Friday.
Willard (38-5) began the day with a 6-4 decision over 11th-seed eighth grader Vandavian Way (27-9) from Gouveneur in Section 10. He lost a 7-0 decision to third-seed senior Caleb Svingala (44-0) from Maple Hill in Section 2 in the quarterfinals to be dropped into the consolation bracket. Willard stayed alive with a pinfall at the 4:11 mark over Putnam Valley junior Hunter Lundberg (28-10) from Section 1 who was the 12th seed.
Willard will face Red Hook senior Matt Morris from Section 9. Morris (40-7) is the seventh seed in the weight class.
Dryden senior Bobby Brotherton was eliminated from the tournament after a 1-2 day as the ninth seed at 145 pounds.
Brotherton (39-9) posted 7-4 decision over eighth-seed junior Ande Klosner (44- 7) from Section 3’s Central Valley Academy in the first round. Brotherton lost a 7-5 decision in the quarterfinals to 16th-seed Seamus Costello (29-2), an East Rochester senior from Section 5 who upset top seed junior Brody Oleksak (35-1) from Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville in Section 4 by injury default at the 4:48 mark of their first round match.
Relegated to the consolation bracket, Brotherton was ousted from the competition after being pinned in 4:42 by 15th-seed Kameron Riodan (46-5), a junior from Pioneer in Section 6.
