Multiple fire departments were on the scene of fire late Tuesday afternoon that destroyed a large Greek Peak Mountain Resort storage barn on Page Green Road.
Virgil, Cortlandville, Dryden, Marathon and Virgil fire departments were among those dispatched after the initial call at 4:39 p.m. to the barn, located about 150 feet east of Page Green Road.
When crews arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames, Virgil Fire Chief Adam Brown said at the fire scene. There was also concern over a 500-pound propane tanks near the structure, Brown said.
The first departments to arrive immediately called for additional tankers. Smoke from the fire billowed from the building, drifting west toward Page Green Road, mixing with fog and drizzle in the valley.
Most of the responding fire vehicles clustered near the barn, their red, white, blue and yellow lights flashing in the darkening scene as night began to fall. Others were parked in a lot at a nearby business on Page Green Road.
Greek Peak owner John Meier said early Tuesday night that he did not anticipate the fire will cause significant problems.
“It will have little impact on our business,” Meier said. “It’s an old dilapidated barn.”
Wesley Kryger, the president of the company, said the fire would have a more significant affect on Greek Peak’s warm weather activities.
“It won’t impact the operation from the ski side of it, but it is definitely a major loss of our summertime equipment,” Kryger said.
He said there were hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment in the building, including a plow truck, a sander, mowers and building materials left over from the construction of Hope Lake Lodge and condominiums, which was completed about a decade ago.
“There was a lot of equipment stored in there,” Kryger said.
Page Green Road was closed between Route 392 and Lash Road while the fire was being fought.
Brown said there were no injuries. He was not sure how the fire began. State fire investigators were being called to the scene.
