Marathon senior Diego Castellot (3) shown in action against South Kortright in the Section 4 Class D Championship game at SUNY Oneonta, was named a NYSSWA All-State Class D First Team player Thursday,

While his basketball season was cut short, Marathon senior Diego Castellot used his strong season to be named a New York State Sportswriters Association Class D first-team all-star.

Castellot averaged 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals per game as the Olympians went 20-3 before reaching the state quarterfinals when the championships were canceled by the COVID-19 virus. Marathon was ranked fifth in the state Class D poll.

“Not sure what to say here,” Marathon coach Jim Holland said. “I think what he has done for my coaching career and this program speaks for itself. He has been an outstanding leader for us and will be sorely missed. He leaves behind numerous records: scoring leader, three point leader and back-to-back sectional title holder. The cancellation of this season didn’t hit me until a few weeks ago…I realized that my time to have any type of influence as his coach has ended. I am saddened by the graduation of Diego. He will never know what he has meant to me for years to come. He ranks as one of THE best I have ever coached.”

Six other local players earned all-state honors. Four were from DeRuyter, one from McGraw and another one from Marathon. DeRuyter senior Frankie Glisson and Marathon senior Andrew Tillotson were both Third Team all-stars. DeRuyter junior Benjamin Barnes and McGraw junior Caleb Smith were both Fourth Team selections. DeRuyter junior Tristan Worlock was a Fifth Team selection and DeRuyter sophomore Gavin Richardson earned honorable mention status.

Joining Castellot as Class D First Team all-state were Chateaugay senior Jonah McDonald (Class D Player of the Year) from Section 10, Lyme senior Isaiah Wilson from Section 3, Prattsburgh senior Mason Putnam from Section 5, Panama senior Cameron Barmore from Section 6 and Schroon Lake senior Andrew Pelkey from Section 7.
