Eight local student-athletes honored

Section III Athletics honors its member schools and their top senior athletes that excelled both in the classroom and on the playing field. A total of eight local student-athletes were honored by Section III in a ceremony broadcast on CNY Central (CW6) and on their website: www.cnycentral.com Monday night.

The eight honorees (by school) were:

  • Cortland: Lillian Quick (soccer, track and field, softball) and Ethan Myers (Soccer, basketball, lacrosse). Quick plans on attending Westminster College while Myers is planning to go to Eastern University
  • Cincinnatus: McKayla Maroney (soccer, basketball, softball) and Trevor Newton (soccer, basketball, track and field). Maroney is planning to attend SUNY Cortland and Newton will head to Alfred State.
  • DeRuyter: Kali Lidell (soccer, volleyball, softball) and Kyle Barnes (basketball, baseball). Lidell will attend LeMoyne College and Barnes will go to Virginia Tech.
  • McGraw: Taylor Conklin (soccer, basketball) and Xiao Long Lin (soccer, basketball). Conklin is going to attend Gannon University) while Lin will head to SUNY Cortland.

Homer did not participate this year according to Section III Executive Director John Rathbun.

The Section III Scholar-Athlete Awards presented by Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast celebrates the accomplishments of the section’s top scholar-athletes and recognizes the achievement of each student. The best male and female scholar-athletes from each of the 106 schools within Section III are honored with a $100 scholarship, plaques and a commemorative program. This year’s program, which will be awarding over $25,000.00 in college scholarships to our outstanding high school student-athletes.

The Section III Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the organization. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 90% or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Section III sponsored sport. Other factors, such as community service, exemplary citizenship or other extracurricular activities are taken into consideration.
