CHITTENANGO — The Homer Trojans girls’ soccer team bent, but didn’t break against the Chittenango Bears on Saturday.
They withstood a 22-shot barrage by the host Bears and scored the lone goal of the match in the 71st minute to come away with a 1-0 win.
With 9:32 left in the game, Katie Britt fielded the ball and found Gracie Patriarco for a one-timer that met the back of the net past goalie Aiyanna McDonell (12 saves), which proved to be the game-winner.
It was vindication for the efforts of goalie Catherine Apker, who stopped all 22 Chittenango shots, despite the relentless efforts of Chittenango’s Emily Moon and Maryanna Garcia.
“Any ball that was in the air seemed to go right to their feet,” Homer head coach Ben Bowers said. “They are good soccer players and do great things. [We] remained grounded and the defense was able to control the ball and direction of shots so that Apker could make some beautiful saves. “
Chittenango earned five corner kicks to Homer’s three.
Homer’s next game starts at 6 p.m. today at home against Onondaga.
