The Cortland Purple Tigers sports teams had a down weekend, with cross country, tennis and girls’ soccer each taking defeats.
J-D girls’ soccer pressures Cortland into shutout
The Jamesville-DeWitt Red Rams controlled possession for most of the first half and ended it with a flurry of goals to down the Purple Tigers, 3-0, Friday at J-D.
J-D kept the ball in the Cortland half of the field for much of the first 40 minutes and was able to connect with most of its passes and keep the ball away from the Cortland defenders. When Cortland tried to clear and counterattack, J-D swarmed over the ball and resumed the pressure.
In the 22nd minute, Brooke Bort made the Red Rams’ efforts pay off on a goal coming from a run from the right side and buried to the left side of the net.
In the 32nd minute, Megan Baker headed in a beautiful service off a corner kick by Avery Young, and three minutes later Baker scored again on a defelction off a Cortland defender.
The Purple Tigers came out swinging in the second half with some of their best speed and passing of the year, but out of their 16 shots, not one could find the back of the J-D net, as Lauren Parker made 10 saves for the Red Rams.
“I’ve never seen the girls play with such intensity, determination, and mental toughness as they did tonight,” Cortland head coach Ilona Ryan said.
Maia Quick, Val Gambitta, Alex Gier and Bryanna Aldrich played terrific defense throughout the game and Lauren Mott made 19 saves for the Purple Tigers, who will host Oswego tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Tennis suffers weekend sweep
The Purple Tigers tennis team lost three matches over the weekend, one to Auburn and two to Jamesville-DeWitt.
Friday’s match against Auburn was the closest. Lexi Zacek and Jordan Vail won their singles matches against Marissa Moore and Elizabeth Spin, respectively. But Auburn won all three doubles matches in straight sets. Kathryn Brown and Tayler Chadderdon defeated Julia Guest and Saide Urtz, 6-4, 6-3; Abigail Carr and Emma Merkley defeated Olivia McKenna and Rowan Harbin, 6-0, 6-0; and Elizabeth Moriarty and Ava Bartolotta defeated Margaret Starr and Sam Engst-Mansilla, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
In two meetings against J-D on Saturday, the Red Rams won 13 of 14 matches. The lone Cortland win went to Zacek, who defeated Celia Reid, 10-4.
