C-H hockey team gets back on track

The Cortland-Homer hockey team bounced back after a tough loss, Ben Barnes joined an exclusive club and the Homer Trojans boys’ basketball team finally got to play on its home court.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

Cortland-Homer 5, Ithaca 2

The Golden Eagles (4-2) brushed off Tuesday’s shutout loss to Skaneateles by defeating Ithaca for the Cortaca Cup.

Jed Brazo scored a natual hat trick for the Golden Eagles and had an assist for a four-point night. Mitch Riter had a goal and two assists, and Tanner Douglass added a goal.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

DeRuyter 76, Cazenovia 61

Ben Barnes scored his 1,000th career point in the Rockets’ win.

“This was a great team win,” Rockets coach Ric Barnes said. “It was a special moment as it is for any player that reaches that monument but even more so for [Ben] who spent many younger days playing football with his very opposition on his big night.”

Gavin Richardson led all scorers with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Riley Glisson added 15 points.

Homer 54, McGraw 42

Jarrett Wilbur (15 points) and Jacob Atkins (14 points) led the Trojans to victory in their first home game.

“Full team effort to pull this one out,” Trojans coach Rex Ryan said. “Everyone who stepped on the court made big shots.”

Caleb Smith led the Eagles with 14 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

McGraw 48, DeRuyter 32

The Eagles (3-0) stayed perfect thanks to Elyssa Fish’s 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Karissa Wilbur added 13 points, and Alexis Stiles had 10 points, five rebounds and four blocks.

“Our goal in this game was to come out and score quick and pressure the ball to create an edge for our defense,” Eagles coach Corey Wilson said. “I thought we did an excellent job creating turnovers and really capitalizing on DeRuyter’s mistakes.”

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

DeRuyter 3, Cincinnatus 0

The Rockets swept the Lions, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-10.

For the Rockets, Madelyn Pforter had 17 assists, Jet Williams had five kills and Keely Worlock had five aces and four kills.

For the Lions, Aubree Nate had four kills, Jayda Mudge had five aces, Deslinn Rutan and Kaylee Brenchley each had three assists and Brenchley had six digs.
