Chittenango’s defensive effort stops Cortland girls

CORTLAND — The Chittenango Bears had a strong defensive third quarter to propel them to a 48-40 victory over the Cortland Purple Tigers Wednesday in girls basketball action at Cortland High.

The Purple Tigers were held to just two field goals in the third quarter, both of which came with under a minute left in the frame.

Mallory Turner led the Purple Tigers with 10 points Kirtsen Merritt, usually a focal point of the Purple Tigers offense, was held scoreless in the second half after scoring seven in the first half.

The Bears were led by Mia McReynolds (11 points, nine in the second half) and Emily Moon (game-high 15 points).


DeRuyter 4, Stockbridge Valley 1

The Rockets and Stockbridge Valley played all five sets to allow their JV teams to get playing time.

Stockbridge Valley won the first set, 25-23, before the Rockets won the next four by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-13.

The Rockets were led by Olivia Lidell (23 assists, 10 digs), Jaidan Degear (11 aces, seven kills, six digs) and Alynna Kanaby (12 digs)
