One found dead in suspicious Cuyler fire

Fire crews work at the scene of a house fire in Cuyler on Monday. A body was found inside the building, but details were unavailable as the fire was under investigation.

One person was found dead Monday morning after a fire in a home on Route 13 near Crains Mills Road in Cuyler, state police said.

Cuyler Fire Department was first on the scene following a call at 10:05 a.m., according to Cortland County Dispatch. The initial call was for entrapment, Cuyler Chief Adam Daley said.

The fire was contained by 11 a.m.  

Daley could not comment more Monday afternoon, as state police were investigating the scene.

Troop C public information officer Aga Dembinska, said one person was found dead inside, but the name was being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Dembinska said the fire was suspicious.

Dembinska declined further comment.

Members of the Cuyler Fire Department were still on scene around 2 p.m. helping with the investigation, Daley said.

Crews from Truxton, Tully, Homer and DeRuyter assisted on scene along with state police and the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

The state police Forensic Identification Unit and State Fire also responded.
