One bicyclist is dead and another is at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse after a driver collided with bicyclists Tuesday evening on Route 26 in Cincinnatus, then fled the scene.
State police said they continue to investigate the dead cyclist, 67-year-old Kitt Warren
of DeRuyter. The injured cyclist, who had non-life threatening injuries, was a 67-year-old John C. Rutan of McGraw.
Two other cyclists were involved in the incident, a 34-year-old Greene Woman and a 64-year-old Cincinnatus man, police said.
The vehicle struck the bicyclists about 7:26 p.m. near the 2900 block of Route 26, forcing the road to be closed between Telephone Road and Taylor Valley Road until about 3 a.m., police said. A Cortland County sheriff’s officer found the vehicle in the town of Willet and investigators are interviewing the person believed to have been driving it.
In addition to state police and sheriff’s officers, Cincinnatus Ambulance, the Cincinnatus Fire Department, and the state police collision reconstruction unit responded to the scene.
