DeRuyter boys soccer forfeits semi vs. Cincy

The Cincinnatus-DeRuyter boys soccer game scheduled for today was cancelled, according to the Mexico Athletics Twitter account. Mexico was set to host the NYSPHSAA Section III Class D semifinal matchup.

The game will not be played, according to the Twitter account, and No. 1 Cincinnatus will advance to the championship game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at VV-S. The Lions will face the winner of No. 2 Belleville-Henderson and No. 3 Manlius-Pebble Hill, which will now be played at 6 p.m. tonight instead of 7 p.m. Mexico will still host the semifinal matchup.

The game was cancelled due to positive COVID-19 tests in the DeRuyter program, according to DeRuyter coach Matt Skele.

“Very unfortunate. There were positive COVID cases that came up over the weekend,” Skele wrote in an email. “We lost some guys from either positive tests or quarantine from that exposure. We had the roster down to 12 and were hoping to be good to go, but the second round of testing that happened today had more positive cases, so we just don’t have enough bodies to play.”

The fourth-seeded Rockets finished their season at 14-3, with all of their losses coming to Cincinnatus, including the forfeit of tonight’s game.

The Marathon boys soccer team’s NYSPHSAA Section IV Class D semifinal match against No. 4 Cherry Valley-Springfield scheduled for Tuesday was postponed to Thursday.

The top-seeded Olympians will take on the Patriots at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Wright National Soccer Campus, Oneonta. Marathon defeated No. 9 Hunter- Tannersville in the quarterfinals, while Cherry Valley-Springfield topped No. 5 Margaretville.

The winner will play in the Section IV Class D championship game at a time to be determined Saturday at Wright National Soccer Campus.

Homer and Cortland’s girls volleyball teams made their respective NYSPHSAA Section III tournament, with Homer competing as the No. 3 seed in Class B and Cortland as the No. 5 seed in Class A.

Homer’s first contest is their third against No. 2 Westhill this season. The 11-5 Trojans went 0-2 against the Warriors, losing 3-1 and 3-0. Homer will enter the game hot, as they defeated both Living Word Academy and Mexico in straight sets to end the regular season.

The game will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Westhill.

Cortland is in a similar position to Homer, facing No. 4 Oswego after dropping both regular season contests to the Buccaneers. The Purple Tigers were competitive, losing 3-2 and 3-1. However, they dropped to 6-9 to end the regular season thanks to a three-match losing skid right before sectionals.

Cortland’s match is at 6 p.m. Friday at Oswego.
