Sorenson, Neff win at Caz Invitational

Sam Sorenson continued his unbeaten season for Homer by winning the 215-pound weight class at the Cazenovia Invitational Saturday. Jeter Neff also took first place in the 145-pound weight class.

Sorenson got a pin in 2:49 in the title match. Neff beat Cortland’s Wyatt Tinker 7-1 on points to win his class. Tinker won all of his matches before the title bout by pin.

Groton’s Donovan Mitchell came in third at 215 pounds, while Cortland’s Asher Tinker and K.R. Dye came in seventh and eighth, respectively. Homer’s Christopher Slade finished seventh at 145 pounds.

Talan Hubbard’s (Homer) unbeaten season came to an end in the 110-pound weight class, losing his final two matches by decision after getting two straight pins in just over a minute.

At 118 pounds, Hunter Lines (Homer) finished in second place after losing the championship match 3-1 in a sudden victory round. Kris Willard (Groton) also topped Zachary Price (Cortland) by pin in 3:15 in the third-place match.

Isaac Allen (Groton) lost the 152-pound title match by pin in 3:02. Zander Johnson (Homer) lost a 7-4 decision in the championship match at 189 pounds to place second.

Cortland’s Luca Canzano beat Homer’s David Morse 4-1 on points in their final match to finish fourth at 160 pounds. Morse finished in sixth. Maddox Johnson (Homer) placed third out of three wrestlers at 172 pounds after being pinned in both of his matches.

Homer came in sixth out of 16 teams with 136 points. Groton finished 12th with 86 points and Cortland came in 13th with 83 points.


A 19-4 first quarter gave Auburn a sizeable lead that it was able to hold onto Friday night as Cortland lost its third game in a row.

Max Gambitta led the Purple Tigers in scoring with 12 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Emerson Johnson tied Gambitta with 12 points of his own to go with seven rebounds.

Tyler Blake scored one point, ripped down 11 boards and blocked two shots. Marvin Bell added five points, eight rebounds and three assists. Carter Baum notched five points and Ben McGrath contributed four to round out Cortland’s scoring.


Jonah Campos and Tasker Dennis teamed up to win the shot put event Saturday at the John Arcaro Memorial Relays at Onondaga Community College. Campos had a throw of 37 feet, 4 inches and Dennis’ throw was 35 feet, 2 inches.

Jack Smith (8.87) and Garret Sickmon (9.78) both ran personal-best times in the 55-meter hurdles to win the event.

Tommy Mahunik and Cooper Vandee also paired up to come in second in the 2×600-meter run. Mahunik’s 1:30.14 time was his best.

Dominick Rosato (45.03) had his best time in the 2X300-meter run, in which he and Sickmon placed fifth. Dylan Pittsley leaped 13 feet, 10.75 inches in the long jump and 27 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump. Both were his best jumps in the respective events. Logan Darling’s 35-foot, 0.25-inch throw in the shot put was also his personal best, while Orie Bush’s 26-foot, 5.5-inch throw in the same event was his best.

Bryant DePaull won the high jump and long jump, representing two of Dryden’s three wins for Dryden at the Winterfest Invite Saturday. He had leaps of 6 feet, 4 inches in the long jump and 20 feet, 6 inches in the long jump. DePaull also came in fourth in the 55-meter hurdles.

Nathan Turner won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.93 seconds, while also coming in second in the long jump behind DePaull.

Lucas Morrow finished third in the 1,600-meter run and Chris West was third in the long jump and sixth in the 55-meter dash. Matt Cubero also came in fourth in the shot put and Luke Maza placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run.

Morrow, West, Maza and Turner teamed up to come in second in the 4×400-meter relay, while Blaise Ayers, Lucas McManus, Aiden Green and Kaden Lockwood finished fourth in the 4×200-meter relay.


Hannah McMasters qualified for the Section III State Qualifier with her 30-foot, 4-inch throw in the shot put at the John Arcaro Memorial Relays Saturday. She teamed up with Molly McMasters to win the event.

Camdyn Cole’s 31-foot, 1.5-inch jump in the triple jump was a personal best, while she and Jane Gugerty won the triple jump.

Molly and Hannah McMasters also came in third in the weight throw.

Caitlin McCloy (48.48) had her personal best in the 300-meter run. Cole (8.21) and Mikayla Smith (8.40) both had their best times in the 55-meter dash. Cece Berkey’s 17-foot, 11.5-inch throw in the shot put and Kira Ludwig’s 19-foot, 10-inch toss in the weight throw topped their previous bests.

Carlea Davis won the 55-meter hurdles and long jump, Walaa Al Shoffe topped the competition in the triple jump and Nicole Morrow placed first in the high jump Saturday at the Winterfest Invite. Davis finished her race in 9.72 seconds and jumped 15 feet, 2 inches. Al Shoffe’s jump was 31 feet, 5.75 inches and Morrow’s leap was 4 feet, 6 inches.

The 4×200-meter relay team of Davis, Raelan Green, Al Shoffe and Morrow won their race in 2:06.24.

Kristina Busby finished second in the triple jump and third in the 55-meter hurdles and shot put. Green placed sixth in the 55-meter dash and Samantha Brown was sixth in the triple jump.
