Homer Central runner Grant Stokoe finished first in Tuesday’s meet at the Cortland Waterworks against Cortland and Central Square.

The Homer Central boys and Central Square girls each picked up two wins Tuesday afternoon in OHSL Freedom Division cross country dual-meet openers on Cortland High’s home SUNY Cortland/Waterworks course.

The Trojan boys beat the Purple Tigers 25-31 and the Redhawks 27-30, Central Square also narrowly besting CHS, 28-31. The Cortland and Central Square girls both beat an incomplete Homer team while the Redhawks downed the Purple Tigers 19-40.

In the Varsity Boys’ race, Homer’s Grant Stokoe was the individual winner in 13:57. That was 11 seconds ahead of Cortland runner-up Andy Ryan’s 14:08 clocking.

The Trojans’ Brady Hart was fourth overall in 14:17, with Andy Swenson eighth in 14:37, Tedd Mercer ninth in 14:39 and Kollin Van Wagenen 15th in 15:54 to complete the scoring.

Following Ryan across the line to score for CHS were Noah Watkins, fifth in 14:25; Tyler Stevens, sixth in 14:26; Alex Ryan, 17th in 15:57 and Dane Koesterer, 26th in 16:58.

Central Square’s top finisher was Gabe Chisari, who took third in 14:14.

“Andy ran great getting second,” Cortland coach Matt Dearie said of Ryan. “His time is over a minute faster than where he was last year. I know Andy, though, and I doubt he was happy with a loss even if it shows great improvement. He is a very focused young man and his focus right now is set on sectionals. Noah and Tyler ran great today, especially Tyler. We have a strong 1-2-3.

“Alex Ryan was a ways back, but he is showing great promise for a new runner to cross country and distance running. His improvement over the next month will be staggering. Dane Koesterer is a freshman who is just figuring out training and racing at this level. His improvement will also be impressive. We lost a close one to Central Square and another fairly close one to Homer. We are a very young team that needs time to improve.”

— In the Varsity Girls’ race, Cortland’s Lauren Phetteplace was second in 16:52 and Homer’s Arielle Moheimani third in 17:22 behind the winner, Eva Keohane of Central Square, who came home in 16:09.

Ella Wilson was eighth in 19:02 and Molly Leonard ninth in 19:03 for the Purple Tigers, with Julia Birdsall 14th in 19:51 and Marissa Dovi 20th in 20:45. Also running for the Trojans were Ashley Tollner, 11th in 19:22, and Amelia Ponirakis, 15th in 20:15.

“Lauren ran great,” Dearie said. “She boldly challenged a runner she knew to have much better results than her so far this year. I always commend boldness and aggressiveness. She fell off the leader’s pace, but held on easily for second place.

“I love the way the girls’ team has been improving as a whole from runners 2-7. I’m proud of their hard work. This early personal success should push them to strive for much greater team improvement by the end of the year. I thoroughly enjoy this group of young ladies. They came away with a win over an incomplete Homer team, but the depth and talent from such a large school and large team as Central Square was overwhelming.”

The Cortland and Homer squads will both compete in Saturday’s McDaniel-Baxter Invitational at Chenango Valley.
