WINDHAM — Avery Barber led the way with two goals Monday afternoon as the fifth-seeded Marathon Central girls’ soccer team beat host Windham-Ashland-Jewett, the fourth seed, 4-2 in the Section 4 Class C quarterfinals.
Darien Shepard and Daisy Allen also scored for the Olympians (10-6-1) and goalie Sydney Jennison made five saves to 10 for W-A-J’s Samantha Aplin, the winners with a narrow 19-18 shot advantage.
The game was deadlocked 1-1 at halftime before the Olympians out of the IAC North Division pulled away.
Jenna Lashua and Emily Valerio scored for the Warriors, who closed the season at 13-5.
Marathon will face top-seeded South Kortright (16-0) in the semifinals Wednesday at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta starting at 3:30 p.m. The other semifinal, at the same site and time on a different field, was to send sixth-seeded Cherry Valley-Springfield (14-4-1) against No. 2 Laurens (15-1).
The championship game will take place Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus, the time to be announced.
IN CLASS C: Trumansburg’s girls were ousted in the quarterfinal round by Unatego on penalty kicks after the two sides battled to a 1-1 overtime standoff.
Mary Rommer assisted on the tying goal and had the decisive penalty kick to lead fourth-seeded Unatego over the fifth-seeded Blue Raiders.
The lone Trumansburg goal came three minutes into the game, Finley Edmonds scoring on a breakaway.
The sets up Wednesday’s Class C semifinal pairings, with third-seed Groton (14-1-1) traveling to face second-seed Elmira Notre Dame (14-2-1) while Unatego (12-1-3) plays at top-seed Lansing (13-1-1) in 3:30 p.m. starts.
IN CLASS D BOYS: IAC Small School champion Marathon will be playing at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta this afternoon, the third-seeded Olympians (13-4) facing second-seed South Kortwright (17-0) in a 3:30 p.m. start.
