Edwin Fox of Cortlandville was killed Tuesday when the tractor he was driving rolled over and pinned him.

A Cortlandville man died Tuesday when the tractor he was driving rolled over on him.

Edwin Fox, 70, of 288 Old Groton Road was found pinned under the wheel of a tractor at 10:52 a.m.

Calvin Cowen Jr. of 287 Old Groton Road was walking his dog when he heard the accident and rushed to Fox. He and the responding officer removed Fox from under a tire. Cowen said he began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the officer could take over.

Fox was taken to Cortland Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Cortland County sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Phelps said.

Fox was hauling a log from a recently cut tree to his backyard, using an older model Farmall 560 tractor when the weight of the tractor became displaced while he was driving down a hill, Cortland County sheriff’s Capt. Robert Derksen said.

The tractor did not have a roll bar.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating. Officers were interviewing two men around 11:30 a.m.

Fox was a quiet, but friendly neighbor, said Cowen, who had lived across the street from him for more than a decade. They had grown to be friends.

“He’d help you in any way,” Cowen said, noting if he ever needed tools or help, he could turn to Fox.

Cowen said Fox was the type of person you could have a conversation about anything with and that he was an avid hunter.

For Cowen he’ll always have the memories of bringing Foxx fruits and vegetables from his garden or mowing their laws together.

“It’s just a shame something like that happened,” Cowen said.
